In baccarat rules, each card has a certain point value. The goal of the game is to have a card value total that is as close as possible to nine. Before the cards are dealt from the shoe (a way of referring to the deck in baccarat), players of the game have to place a bet on the player, on the dealer or on a tie.

The cards numbered two to nine are taken at their face value, while the tens, jacks, queens and kings are said to have no value at all, or that their value is zero. An ace is worth a single point. In the game, the value of the cards each player has are added together to form a single value no more nine. If the cards total more than nine, the rightmost number of the total is used. Thus a player who has an ace and a four, for example, will end up with a total of five. A player with an eight and a nine will end up with a total value of seven, as eight plus nine is 17, with seven being the rightmost number. In some cases, a third card will be dealt from the shoe.

Though getting a point value closer to nine than your opponent is the point of the game, those who have placed a bet on the outcome of the hand could also win. If a bet is placed on the player and the hand is won by the player, a ratio of two to one is usually paid on that bet (depending on the casino and the variant). If a dealer wins and you have bet on that outcome, a two to one ratio is again paid out, though this is not based on the original amount that was bet, since a 5% commission is taken by the casino. If the game ends in a tie and you placed your bet on a tie, a ratio of nine to one is usually paid out.
