Named for its wheel, the game of roulette is one of the oldest around, having been first made popular in France in the 18th Century. Though the mathematician Blaise Pascal had invented a form of Roulette about a hundred years before that time in his search for a machine that could spin in perpetual motion, it was not until the 1800s that the game really took off. The name of the game comes from a French word that means “small wheel” and this is exactly what the game is based on. Comprising a felt “board” and a wheel with black, red and green on it, roulette is a game that allows players to place bets on what number or colour on the wheel they think a small silver ball will land.

Learning to play Roulette

Learning how to play roulette is extremely simple. There is nothing more complicated in the game than selecting a number or colour to bet on and hoping that the win is yours. However, there are some people who make use of a roulette strategy when they play. Note that the strategy is based on how players will bet, not necessarily on what number will appear, which is a process that cannot be predicted. Most players place their bets based on certain odds. Given that the wheel is numbered from zero to the number 36, there are only so many ways in which you can bet. In some variants of the game, specifically American roulette, a double zero is added to the board, and this changes the odds.

Roulette Odds

Your roulette odds are influenced by where you place your chips, and there are a number of ways in which you can do this. You could place a single, or straight bet, in which you choose one number and place your chip in the middle of that number’s square on the felt board. If you choose to split your bet, you can straddle your chip on the line between two numbers, essentially betting on both. A square bet is a bet on four numbers at the same time, where you put your chip on the centre of the square that forms around those four numbers. There are many more ways in which you can bet, including basket, street, top line and more, but when you are start learning how to play, the most important types of bets you should note are red or black. You can choose to split your odds, giving yourself a 50/50 chance of winning by picking either red or on black, but note that your win will be quite small if you happen to pick the right colour.

Throughout history there have been many who have tried to predict the outcome of the game of roulette. Many of these were engineers or mathematicians who tried to base their predictions on the mechanical workings of the roulette wheel. Needless to say, many of them failed. When you play online, it is obviously impossible to try and make use of that type of prediction system, which means your Online Roulette strategy should be based on how you bet. A betting strategy is one that you create based on the amount of money you have, how you want to bet and how you think the game will turn out.

One of the more popular variants of roulette played online is chat roulette, which is a game that allows you to interact with the dealer and in some cases, with other players. While you play, you make use of a chat window in which you can have conversations with others, giving you the feel of a real casino even though you are playing at home.
